Whether you go to a school that teaches only photography, or go to a university where you can pursue a degree in photography, you may benefit greatly from embarking on an educational path. Searching for careers in photography may be less of a difficult process after you've have completed your education.
Of the many careers in photography, many people still choose the freelance option because they are able to set their own hours and choose the jobs they will accept. On the other hand, you do not have the job security and benefits that would be yours if you were to work for a company in one of the careers in photography. When you work for a newspaper or magazine, you may have a steady paycheck. This is a financial consideration you may have to make when choosing from the many careers in photography.
If you would like to freelance but need the job stability, you may want to consider doing side work. By working for a company in one of the careers in photography, you may be able to have the stability and security that you want. Doing jobs on the side may also give you the level of control you seek from working freelance. Once you have enough experience and have built a client base, you may find that you are ready to freelance full time and give up your day job.
