Over the years, many different occupations have changed direction, and graphic arts is no exception. It went from hand drawings to a special computer and now to software that anyone can learn to use. Of course, there was no choice; once computer technology began moving in an upward trend, the graphic arts industry had to follow right behind or they would lose momentum. That loss of momentum in the graphic arts industry would have been a huge mistake, but fortunately, the industry was able to keep up with all of the changes.
Graphic arts has changed as a result of the changes, however. Today instead of building signs and window advertisements, the majority of graphic arts is devoted to creating images and other graphical content for the websites of the same clients who required manual graphic art. It's the same company and the same job, but you're performing it a quicker and easier way. Graphic artists are sometimes hired by the client directly, but in many cases, the web designer hires someone to do the graphic arts for the website. The graphic arts professional may also be called upon to design images for ebooks, forums, and even instant messaging programs.
If you're interested in working in the graphic arts industry, you will need to obtain a degree at a college or art school. From there you can pursue your goal to become a graphic arts professional either as a freelance graphic artist or seeking employment with a company in the industry such as a web designer. Your education will not stop at your degree; you will need to continue your educational process in order to stay up to date on all the changes within the graphic arts industry. Being up to date with the latest in graphic arts is important to clients and employers, so in order to succeed, you must be willing to stay on top of the trends.
