The Creative World of Visual Arts
Visual arts are two-dimensional arts that are seen, such as painting, filmmaking and photography. Visual art is different from the three dimensional arts, such as sculpture. These are called plastic arts. Visual arts are also different from performing arts, culinary arts and language arts although they sometimes employ visual arts.
At present, visual arts refer to fine arts and crafts. However, things were different for the past centuries. During the 20th century, visual artists are those who are working in the field of fine arts, such as sculpture, printmaking and sculpture. Those who are involve in the applied arts, such as crafts, were not referred to as visual artists. This is because at that time artists are assigned to a higher level than those in applied arts. A craftsman could never be considered as an artist. It was only when the modernist emphasized the distinction that the changes were made. With the demand of the modernist craftsmen to be treated as artists, today they are also called artists.
At present the study of visual arts are offered in many colleges and universities. Visual arts course includes Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic arts, photography, drawing, interactive media, sculpture, painting and interdisciplinary and design studies or IADS. The most modern visual arts course is IADS, which integrates all the visual arts and design. The study of IADS also emphasizes comprehensive study of any of the following: museum and gallery study, teaching art, advertising or printmaking or book arts.
Students who enroll in visual arts courses lean to develop their skills in that particular visual art. They will also learn to master their creativity and apply their knowledge in the competitive world of visual arts. As they finish their programs in visual arts, they will be able to use their knowledge as professional artists and designers.
